FAQs
What is a Cow Share?
A cow share is something you purchase while the steer is still being finished on our ranch.
We currently offer shares in: quarter, half, and full cow options.
How much meat do I get for each share size?
Price per pound is based on hanging weight. Hanging weight is the weight of the carcass after initial slaughter but before aging and butchering. Hanging weight will very depending on the breed of the cow, but on average the hanging weight of our steers will be between 500-650lbs.
The typical pounds of wrapped meat cuts received after butchering ranges from 60-75% of the hanging weight and is driven by the cut selection by the customer. A customer can work with the butcher to maximize this during selection of their cut sheet.
Example:
Let’s assume a steer has a 600lb hanging weight, here is the estimated range of packaged meat you will receive:
Full Share : 360 - 450lbs
Half Share : 180 - 225lbs
Quarter Share : 90 - 112lbs
*all weight is after butchering
How do I ensure I get the cuts I want?
After slaughter, the beef is aged 12–20 days at Barstow Country Butcher. Once ready, the butcher will contact you to review a cut sheet, letting you customize everything—from cut types and package sizes to specialty options like smoked or seasoned items. It’s a truly tailored experience for your family’s needs.
What’s the full cost of a cow share, including butcher fees?
Our current pricing for 2025 is as follows :
Full Share: $9/lb
Half Share: $10/lb
Quarter Share: $12/lb
$250 butcher site fee (split between shares)
Butcher Fee can vary slightly but is estimated at $1.55-$1.70/lb depending on your selection.
Here is how that breaks down for each share size based on a 600lb hanging weight:
Full Share:
600lbs x $9 = $5,400
$250 = $250
600lbs x $1.55 = $930
Est. Total = $6,580
Half Share:
300lbs x $10 = $3,000
$250 / 2 = $125
300lbs x $1.55 = $465
Est. Total = $3,590
Quarter Share:
150lbs x $12 = $1,800
$250 / 4 = $62.50
150lbs x $1.55 = $232.50
Est. Total = $2,095
The best value is a full share, and we encourage friends and family to invest together. However, when you take into account that the meat you receive is customized to your liking and will include roasts, steaks, ribs, ground meets and more, the price per pound still saves over what purchasing all of that at the grocery store would cost you, even at the quarter share level.
How long will my meat last?
The meat is vacuum packed. labeled and deep frozen. Assuming all meat stays frozen, it can last three to five years in a freezer. We recommend acquiring a chest freezer for bulk meat storage.
Do you sell smaller boxes or individual cuts of meat?
No. At this time we do not sell smaller boxes or individual cuts of meat as we keep our inventory low to ensure our steers have the best quality of life and a low stress environment.
How often do you make cow shares available for purchase?
We are a small business focused on quality, sustainability and value, which means we maintain a small herd. Because of this, we currently offer cow shares only once per year. We are making plans to expand and hope in the future to offer shares twice per year.
Does CG consume their own meat?
Yes! This is how we started.
We wanted to have more control over the quality of our food and the environment the animals are raised in. This is why we take the utmost pride in what we do. Our meat is not just headed to your table, it’s on ours as well.
Are your cows ever fed grain?
No. They are grass-fed, grass-finished. However, during our non-grass-growing months our cows are fed a three-way barley hay and bermuda grass. 3-way barley contains naturally occurring grains in the barley stocks. However, our cows are never fed or finished on grain.
